Sheriff in Paris Hilton case has checkered record

L.A. County Sheriff Lee Baca apparently has a history of using his authority to benefit friends and supporters. While in office, he’s accepted thousands of dollars worth of trips, meals, and tickets to sporting events.
Baca’s decision to release Hilton from prison has come under heavy fire. That decision was reversed by the judge in the case. After ordering Hilton back to prison on Friday, Superior Court Judge Michael Sauer said he “at no time condoned the actions of the sheriff.”
Baca was also involved in the Mel Gibson arrest. His department withheld video tapes of the arrest, asserting they were exempt from open-government laws.
According to the AP: There were questions about favorable treatment for Gibson after a sheriff’s spokesman initially said the arrest occurred “without incident” and made no mention of the superstar’s now-notorious anti-Semitic rant.
Last year, the Los Angeles Times reported that Baca put a close friend on the payroll as a $105,000-a-year adviser. He also accepted more than $42,000 in gifts since taking office. In 2004, he took more gifts than California’s other 57 sheriffs combined.
I’m no fan of Paris Hilton, but any anger regarding her early release should be directed at this idiot sheriff. This man violated a judge’s order and his department initially refused to drive Paris to the emergency hearing (instead suggesting she make an appearance by phone).
I would hope his days in office are numbered.
