The WT On: Playtime
I’ve already referenced the games we used to play. But sometimes it rained, or we were bored, or our moms were away and it was our chance to stay in and watch soft porn on HBO.
Whatever the reason, we often had to find things to play with in the house. Our favorite by far was thermometers. Not the stupid digital ones of today, but the original, glass, mercury-filled thermometers. We’d gather up a bunch from different houses and break them. Then we’d get that cool silver stuff from the inside and play with it. Talk about awesome! It rolled and bounced and was shiny and nifty. My cousin Mikey could roll it into little balls, put them on his tongue, and make them dance! Sometimes he swallowed them, but that was okay. We could always get more.
Then I got older and learned what that cool silver stuff was. Mercury. You’re not supposed to touch it. You’re definitely not supposed to swallow it. Oh man…there were so many times we probably should’ve died.
How in the hell did we survive childhood?
