The 2008 Summer Olympics: Are You Ready?
Well, former Sudanese refugee Lopez Lomong is most def. ready.
Why you ask? He’s been chosen to bear the Olympic flag. The remarkable story behind this decision lies with Lomong’s past. He is 23 years of age and has fled from the bloody civil war in Sudan at the innocent age of 6. He has spent 10 years in a refugee camp in Kenya as part of ” The Lost Boys of Sudan” generation.
Holy shit, I feel microscopic next to Lomong’s life. Thankfully, he was able to come to the US and gained citizenship last year. He qualified for the Olympics at the US trails last month along with Kenya-born world champion Bernhard Lagat.
Lomong has said: I’m here as an ambassador of my country and I will do everything I can to represent my country well. This is another amazing step for me in celebrating being an American.
Awe-inspiring. To be from a different country and to accomplish so many things. Millions of Americans should learn from Lomong’s story.
