Jake Gyllenhaal As Captain Marvel?
New Line is reportedly setting its eyes on Jake Gyllenhaal to shout “Shazam!” and turn into Captain Marvel in a movie titled, of course, “Shazam!”
According to NY Daily News, New Line is ready and willing to spend up to $200 million in its bid for a movie franchise of another superhero lifted from DC Comics.
If you ask me, Jake is the perfect choice to play the superhero. His alter-ego that is, the kid Billy Batson. If you remember, the kid Billy Batson turns into the adult Captain Marvel whenever he utters the name of the wizard who gave him his powers and gets struck by a magic lightning bolt.
Despite the very adult performance Jake gave in Brokeback Mountain, he still very much looks like a geeky kid. That might have worked for Tobey Maguire and Spiderman, but it doesn’t seem right that a geeky-looking guy would play the “The Big Red Cheese”, red tights, embossed lightning on chest, strangely short cape and all.
Maybe they should get Matthew McConaughey to be the Captain Marvel to Gylenhaal’s Billy Batson. Matthew looks adult enough, has the strong chin of Captain Marvel, and is Jake’s best friend to boot. As long as there are no scenes reminiscent of Brokeback Mountain on set, Shazam! is gonna be just fine.
