Jordin Wins, Simon Quitting

In a contest pitting the better
performer
versus the better
singer,
17-year-old Jordin Sparks edged out Blake Lewis to become the youngest
American Idol
winner (proving the show is in fact a
singing
competition).

The finale pulled out the stops with Gwen Stefani, Smokey Robinson, Tony Bennett, Bette Midler, and Green Day among those performing. Also appearing were four of the previous five
Idol
winners. Fantasia Barrino was the only missing performer…but I don’t think we were missing much there.

In related news, Simon Cowell announced he would be quitting the show when his contract expires in three years. Where does that leave the show? The ratings have certainly been slipping this season. The
Idol
finale on Tuesday was defeated by
Dancing With The Stars.
Without the most candid and entertaining judge, the show’s days will be numbered.
