DiCaprio Considered Deep-sixing Career After Titanic
Titanic, the highest-grossing film of all time, made Leonardo DiCaprio a big star. It also made him a worldwide sex symbol, with millions of women literally drooling at the sight of this piece of cute meat.
But it’s exactly that perception that nearly cost the entertainment world such a fine young actor. DiCaprio admits in an interview with
Newsweek
that he thought about quitting acting after the runaway success of Titanic made him just “another piece of cute meat”
What’s with this people-think-I’m-cute-now-my-life-is-over mentality anyway? As far as I’m concerned, the only time a “cute” tag is annoying is when the word “untalented” immediately follows, a fine enough description for many actors trying to make it in Hollywood. Leonardo, on the other hand, is one of the finest young actors today.“It was pretty disheartening to be objectified like that. I wanted to stop acting for a little bit,” he said at the magazine’s Oscar panel discussion with other actors. “It changed my life in a lot of ways, but at the same time, I can’t say that it didn’t give me opportunities. It made me, for the first time, in control of my career.” [

Well, the fact that he’s hardly the cutest nowadays should bring him some measure of comfort.
